What is AVIF, and why won’t it open?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is one of the newest image formats. It is based on the AV1 video codec and compresses remarkably well, often half the size of a JPG at similar quality, so more and more websites and image services deliver pictures as AVIF. Some Android phones and cameras can also save photos in it.

Support outside the browser is still patchy. Older versions of Windows Photos, Microsoft Office, many photo editors, print shops, and plenty of upload forms will not open an AVIF file or will reject it. Converting to JPG gives you a file that works everywhere.

It works even if your browser cannot show AVIF

The tool does not depend on your browser’s own image support. It ships its own AVIF decoder, a WebAssembly build of libavif, and its own JPG encoder. That means the conversion works the same in Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, including older versions that cannot display AVIF themselves.

Things to know

  • File size. The JPG will usually be larger than the AVIF, because AVIF is the more efficient format. Lower the quality slider to around 80 for a smaller file, or keep AVIF and convert to WebP for a middle ground.
  • Transparency. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white. Use the image converter with PNG output if you need to keep them.
  • High bit depth. AVIF can store 10 or 12-bit colour. JPG is 8-bit, so the image is saved in standard colour depth.

Converting other modern formats? There are one-click pages for HEIC to JPG and WebP to JPG.

Private by design

Decoding and encoding happen in a background thread on your device. Your images are never uploaded, so you can convert personal photos safely, and the tool keeps working offline after the first visit.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It is very efficient, which is why websites and some cameras use it, but many desktop apps and upload forms still cannot open it.

Do I need a special browser?

No. The AVIF decoder is built into the tool as WebAssembly, so it works in any current browser, even ones that cannot display AVIF themselves.

What about HDR or transparent AVIF images?

JPG is 8-bit and has no transparency, so high-bit-depth images are saved as standard 8-bit colour and transparent areas become white.

Are my files uploaded anywhere? How can I check?

No. The AVIF to JPG converter runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device. You can verify it: open your browser's DevTools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac), switch to the Network tab, tick "Preserve log", clear the list and process a file. You will only see requests for this site's own static files, never one that carries your data. You can also turn on "Offline" in the Network tab (or disconnect from the internet) once the page has loaded, and the tool keeps working.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit a service worker saves the tool to your device, so it opens and works without a connection. Only advertising needs the internet; the processing never does.
