Why convert a JPG to PNG?

Most of the time JPG is the right format for photos. There are a few good reasons to switch:

  • Editing. Every time you save a JPG it is compressed again and loses a little more detail. Converting to PNG once, editing, and saving as PNG stops that generational loss.
  • Upload requirements. Some design tools, print services, game mods and app stores insist on PNG.
  • Overlays and graphics. If you plan to add text, arrows or a cut-out in an editor, starting from a PNG keeps those edges crisp.

What converting can and cannot do

PNG is lossless: it stores the pixels exactly as they are. It cannot restore detail that was thrown away when the JPG was first made, so blocky artefacts in a heavily compressed photo stay. What you gain is that nothing gets worse from here on.

Expect the PNG to be several times larger than the JPG. Photos contain millions of subtly different colours, and lossless compression cannot shrink those as much as JPG does. If the file becomes too big for where it is going, compress the PNG to reduce its palette, or keep the JPG for sharing and the PNG for editing.

The converted PNG has a solid background, because a JPG has no transparency to carry over.

Private, fast and offline

Your photos are decoded and saved as PNG inside your browser, in a background thread on your own device. They are never uploaded, so there is no waiting for a server and no copy left behind anywhere. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working without an internet connection, and you can process as many photos as your device’s memory allows.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. PNG stores the pixels exactly as they are now, so it stops further loss when you edit and resave, but it cannot bring back detail the JPG compression already removed.

Why is the PNG larger than my JPG?

PNG is lossless, and photos contain millions of slightly different colours, which lossless compression cannot shrink much. A PNG of a photo is typically three to eight times bigger than the JPG.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

A JPG has no transparency to carry over, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. To remove a background you need an editor; this tool converts the format only.

Are my files uploaded anywhere? How can I check?

No. The JPG to PNG converter runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device. You can verify it: open your browser's DevTools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac), switch to the Network tab, tick "Preserve log", clear the list and process a file. You will only see requests for this site's own static files, never one that carries your data. You can also turn on "Offline" in the Network tab (or disconnect from the internet) once the page has loaded, and the tool keeps working.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit a service worker saves the tool to your device, so it opens and works without a connection. Only advertising needs the internet; the processing never does.
